What should a new dog owner know about dog health care? Do they have to take a puppy to the vet if it was adopted from a shelter? How much do vaccinations cost?

I'd like to know what's best to feed my dog (not necessarily specific brand recommendations, but just guidelines) and get some general information about dog health.
Dog health?

I took my dog to the vet like 2 weeks ago for a vaccine (rabies). Yesterday I felt a small mass just before his knee. Could this be caused by the vaccine or should I be worried?. I know I have to take him to the vet. I just need to save some money. The mass is soft and it does not causes him any pain. What could it be?

Some Commonly Found Health Problems in Older Dogs
Fri, 09/16/2011 - 04:12 | by admin"Puppyville" is importing dogs from out of state by a trucking company. Reportedly, several of these dogs were "sent back" due to health issues. Sent where and what was done with them? Another report has one of the dogs at the store dying of parvo. Supposedly the store is hiding it from the authorities. Stop this madness! Protest them! Write to the store owner and his landlord. Write to the mayor of Va. Beach and tell her we don't need any animals imported into this community as long as we are still killing the excess at animal control.
Just as in humans, health issue come up in dogs as they age. Let's take a look at some top issues dogs face as they grow older.
First, bad breath occurs in a dog due to a constipated digestive system. Such a digestive system locks the putrefying toxic wastes in the body of the dog and the stench is emitted from the mouth. Bad breath occurs due to a diet consisting of dead, refined food having no raw, live food or fiber.
Just because a dog has a daily bowel movement does not mean that the dog is not constipated. All dogs suffer from constipation at some point of time in their life. There are very few exceptions to this rule. However, very few owners ever get to know that their dog is constipated. The best way to get rid of bad breath is to give the dog a mix of rosemary leaves and flowers or lemon juice and water or apple juice or raw honey and water. It is advisable to make the dog fast for a few days to get rid of the immediate problem. To prevent recurrence, make the dog fast for at least one day of the week. Feed it nothing but distilled water and raw honey on that day. Use lots of raw fruits and vegetables, yogurt and raw or slightly braised meat. These changes should solve the problem bad breath.
Aged dogs are found to face the problem of slow loss of hair due to ill health. To solve this problem, feed the dog a diet of raw meats, vegetables and fruits. Feed brewers' yeast, kelp, desiccated liver, raw corn, olive, peanut or safflower oil to provide the dog with unsaturated fatty acids. Bathe the balding areas with rosemary leaves, marigold flowers or daffodil leaves. You can try massaging castor oil or eucalyptus oil as well.
Unspayed female dogs often face the problem of breast tumors. These occur due to hormonal imbalances and changes. If the dog is facing the problem of toxemia and ill health, the chances of breast tumor increases. It may also be connected with the estrogen in the body. It is important to remember that a tumor is an attempt by the body to isolate a harmful condition. A tumor is usually benign in some of its areas and malignant in other areas. You must keep in mind that a biopsy can aggravate the malignant portion and cause the tumor to spread even more rapidly.
A tumor is a message from the body that something is not right. Simply removing the tumor is not the solution. You must focus on removing the tumor as well as the cause of the tumor. It is very essential to remove the toxicity. This can be done by enriching the diet with live, raw foods which will ensure the supply of vital enzymes to the body. You can also opt for enzyme therapy along with the raw foods. You can also use herbal therapies to rectify the problem.
The general theory about cancer is that it is caused by faulty protein metabolism. A shift to raw, live food diet will give the body the opportunity to rectify the fault. The shift will clean up the blood stream and this will enhance the overall health of the body.

Health Insurance for Your Dog
Sun, 09/11/2011 - 08:37 | by adminThe word insurance is one of those words that just makes you cringe. Next to putting gas in your car it seems like the biggest expense you have and there is just so much that you need. You need to keep insurance on your car (it would have been really nice if somebody would have told how big a financial drain that was going to be), if you own a home you pay homeowners insurance, if you rent an apartment you have renters insurance, you struggle with the ever soaring cost of health care insurance, and if you are a really responsible family member you have life insurance. And now you find you are hearing that you should consider purchasing a health insurance plan for your pet dog. Â Â Â Â
You love your dog, he's more then a pet, he's a valued member of your family and probably your best friend. But health insurance? You can barely afford to put food on your table how are you supposed to be able to
Pet Health Insurance - Learn Your Options!
afford to insure your pet. Besides he's just a mutt, dog health care insurance is for fancy purebred show dogs, not your rescue pet. Â Â Â Â
The shoestring you're probably living on is the very reason you might want to consider putting pet health insurance on your pet. The average dog owner takes their pet dog to the veterinarian approximately 2.3 times a year and it will cost you approximately two hundred and eleven dollars per year. My guess is that each time you pay the vet bill your budget is screaming for mercy. Â Â Â Â
What happens if your dog contracts a disease, or gets hurt? It doesn't take much to rack up some pretty serious vet bills. What if you have to leave town and can't take your dog with you? Can you really afford to leave your dog at a boarding kennel? You already know how much you have to pay for your prescriptions, do you really think that a dog prescription is going to be any cheaper. Your dog is your best friend and a treasured member of your family could you really live with yourself if you had to put him to sleep just because you couldn't afford his vet bill. Â Â Â Â
It is possible to get health care insurance for your dog for approximately ten dollars a month. While it might not cover all of your dogs vet care needs it could help. If you shop around and read each plan carefully you should even be able to find a pet healthcare plan that will help pay for your routine vet visits. Some pet insurance plans will even cover some boarding expenses. Some questions you should ask the pet health insurance company you are considering buying a pet health care policy from is whether or not your vet accepts that particular type of insurance, if there is a cap on treatments, how much is your deductible, and how will they handle any pre-existing conditions your dog might have.
